仕事は何のためにやっていますかという質問をすると、お金のため、自分のため、他者のため、社会のために貢献するということであると答える人が多いと思う。実際自分の行っている仕事についてどのような思いを持っていようが、多くの会社員はトップダウンで指示を受け、その仕事をきちんと遂行しさえすれば上から文句を言われることもなく給料をもらうことができるだろう。おそらく年次が上がってくるにつれて自分の裁量の部分が大きくなっていくだろうが、事業の方針というのを決めるのはまた更に上の位の方々ではある。このようなトップダウンの経営は非常に効率が良いと思う。ピラミッドの一番上に大きな目標を作ってくれるのでそれ以下の人間はその目標に向けて進むことができる。ピラミッドの目標が見当違いな場合はどうしようもないのだが…
しかし、やはり研究開発職として思うのがトップダウンの仕事だけをしていてはだめだということだ。我々の分野では広範囲に研究が進んでおり、なかなか新たなブレークスルーが得られにくい状況である。そんな状況ではあるもののやはり同じことやユーザーフォローの案件ばかりしているだけでは先が細っていくだけである。そういった観点から日ごろからきちんと製品に使われている原理を理解し、そこから導き出される有効な次の手を考えておかなければならないなと思った。
